What the plant can actually deliver
THCA lives in the trichomes — the resin glands frosting the flower. So when a menu is wall to wall 33% and 34%, it is describing one of two things: a historic run of once-in-a-harvest flower on every single shelf, or a testing process with its thumb on the scale. Occam's razor has a strong opinion about which.
Why the numbers inflate
The inflation isn't a mystery or a conspiracy — it's an incentive structure working exactly as built:
- The producer picks the lab. In the hemp-derived market there is no assigned, independent tester. The vendor chooses who tests its flower and pays the invoice.
- Higher numbers sell more flower. Buyers have been trained to sort by potency, so a lab that reports generous numbers makes its clients more money.
- Labs that report higher numbers keep more clients. Follow those two facts to their conclusion and you get quiet upward pressure on the printed figure.
